Economy 7 Fights Global Warming:

The 'White Heat of British Technology'

Harold Wilson's 'White Heat of British Technology' had at least some of the answer to the power generation gap that the UK is alleged to have in the near future. In 1974 Prime Minister Harold had asked for ideas to cut the number of power stations needed in the UK. Economy 7 was my answer. Cheap rate electricity at night for the consumer is a result of it, and it is used to store hot water and heat bricks in heat tight radiators for use during the day.

Countries have to have extra power stations because there is a big drop in electricity demands at night. The only thing an electricity generating company can do about this is shut down power stations. But it takes longer to shut down a power station and then restart it than there are hours in the night. Thus extra power stations are needed to cover for this over run. With Economy 7, more cheap electricity is bought by the consumer during the night, and so less power stations have to be switched off. There is then less need for the power stations that are covering and so there is a drop in the number of power stations needed.

One problem I have with Economy 7 is that when I invented it I asked that space age technologies be used to build hot water tanks and radiators. While the water tanks are well lagged with foam, the radiators, instead of keeping their heat until when it is needed in the cold of the evening, leak heat when it is not needed because they are made of thin metal. Starlite, by Maurice Ward, would be the answer to this long term design fault. (It could also be used to lag walls behind ordinary radiators that at present leak 50% of their heat into the wall.)

Once the Economy 7 radiators are used to trap the heat in using Starlite, then heat will only be given out when the vents on the radiator are opened. I would like to see all homes and businesses use Economy 7, it could and should cause a dramatic cut in Greenhouse gases, making more nuclear power stations unnecessary.


Tesla, amongst others, has designed a lithium-ion battery home battery that is capable of charging using cheap rate electricity at night, for use in the house during the day. If the price of such a devise comes down, then this could lead to less need for daytime electricity, and thus a further cut in the number of power stations needed.



Harold Wilson bringing ecology to the political system by way of Economy 7 led to then leader of the Conservative Party, Ted Heath, to both get violent towards me, and to start up the Ecologist Party (now the UK Green Party) in order to waste the ecology vote, with the new Party to rejoin the Conservative Party at a later date. An attempt to do so was made by Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron.


Economy 7 shut down four coal fired power stations in the UK alone, saving 22,541,143 tons of coal per year, which produces 64,467,668.6 tons of CO2 per year. So I have a negative carbon footprint, perhaps an invention of yours, or a campaign you are in can, do even better.


When I invented Economy 7 I wanted the radiators lagged with space age technology, and Starlite was soon invented, but not used. If you have an Economy 7 radiator you can get the idea of what Starlite would have done for your radiator by covering it with a cardboard layer covered with aluminium foil, this will cut unwanted heat loss by 90%. Now tell your radiator manufacturer how much heat you are now producing.  


Cheap rate electricity has helped countries shut down their dangerous nuclear power stations around the world, and various technologies that can use it can help countries to shut down more.
